Documentation
Everything you need to install, configure, and get the most out of PCSXFIVE.
Installation Guide
System Requirements
Before installing, verify your PC meets the minimum specs: Windows 10/11 (64-bit), Intel Core i7-8700K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600, NVIDIA RTX 2070 or AMD RX 5700 XT, 16 GB RAM, 50 GB SSD, and DirectX 12 or Vulkan 1.3. Recommended specs for 4K/60fps: Intel Core i9-12900K or AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, NVIDIA RTX 3080 or AMD RX 6800 XT, 32 GB RAM.
Download the Installer
After purchasing your license, visit your download page. Click the Download Installer button to save PCSXFive-Setup.exe to your PC. The installer is approximately 180 MB.
Run the Installer
Double-click PCSXFive-Setup.exe. If prompted by Windows UAC, click Yes to allow the installer to run. Follow the wizard — choose your installation directory (default: C:\Program Files\PCSXFIVE) and click Install.
Activate Your License
Launch PCSXFIVE from your desktop or Start menu. The activation dialog appears on first launch. Copy your license key from your download page and paste it into the activation field. Click Activate. An internet connection is required for the initial activation.
Configuration
Graphics Settings
Open Settings > Graphics. Set your target resolution (1080p, 1440p, or 4K) and frame rate cap. Enable Vulkan backend for best performance on AMD GPUs; use DirectX 12 for NVIDIA. Enable Shader Pre-compilation on first launch to reduce in-game stutters — this takes 5–10 minutes but only runs once.
Controller Setup
Go to Settings > Controllers and click Scan for Devices. PCSXFIVE supports DualSense (USB recommended for haptics), DualShock 4, Xbox controllers, and most XInput-compatible gamepads. For DualSense haptic feedback emulation, connect via USB and enable DualSense Enhanced Mode in the controller settings.
Loading Game Dumps
Go to File > Open Game and navigate to your game dump folder. PCSXFIVE supports PKG and disc image formats dumped from your own PS5. Select the game file and click Open. Games are added to your library automatically for future launches.
Save States & Memory
PCSXFIVE supports both native PS5 save data and emulator save states. Use File > Save State (F5) and Load State (F7) for quick saves. Native saves are stored in Documents\PCSXFIVE\saves and are compatible with PS5 cloud saves if you have a PlayStation Network account.
Performance Tuning
GPU Driver Requirements
Always use the latest GPU drivers. NVIDIA: Game Ready Driver 531.00 or newer. AMD: Adrenalin 23.2.1 or newer. Outdated drivers are the most common cause of crashes and graphical corruption. Update via GeForce Experience or AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
Reducing Stutters
Enable Shader Pre-compilation in Settings > Performance. This builds a shader cache on first launch, eliminating mid-game compilation stutters. Also disable Windows Game Mode and Xbox Game Bar, which can interfere with frame pacing. Set your power plan to High Performance.
Resolution Scaling
If your GPU struggles at native 4K, enable FSR 2.0 or DLSS (NVIDIA only) in Settings > Graphics > Upscaling. Quality mode provides near-native image quality at significantly lower GPU load. For mid-range GPUs, 1440p with FSR Quality mode is the recommended sweet spot.
CPU Optimisation
PCSXFIVE is heavily multi-threaded. In Settings > CPU, set Thread Count to match your physical core count (not logical). Disable Accurate Timing unless a specific game requires it — this setting reduces performance by up to 30% and is only needed for a small number of titles.
Troubleshooting
Emulator Won't Launch
Right-click PCSXFive.exe and select Run as Administrator. Temporarily disable antivirus software — some AV tools flag emulators as false positives. Verify your GPU drivers are up to date. If the issue persists, reinstall using the latest installer from your download page.
Black Screen on Game Launch
This is usually a shader compilation issue. Delete the shader cache folder at Documents\PCSXFIVE\cache and relaunch. Allow shader pre-compilation to complete fully before starting the game. If the issue persists, try switching between Vulkan and DirectX 12 backends in Settings > Graphics.
Controller Not Detected
Go to Settings > Controllers and click Scan for Devices. For DualSense, use a USB connection — Bluetooth can cause detection issues on some systems. Ensure no other application (Steam, DS4Windows) is claiming exclusive access to the controller. Restart PCSXFIVE after connecting the controller.
Activation Errors
Ensure you have an active internet connection. Check that your system clock is set correctly — time sync issues can cause activation failures. If you see error code ACT-002, your license may already be activated on another machine. Contact support to transfer your license.
